Frequently Asked Questions About Counselling and How We Can Help
I am passionate about my work and am committed to helping and support my clients towards a more fulfilling and rewarding life. I feel privileged to be part of an industry that is dedicated to helping personal growth and empowerment.
How long will counselling sessions last?
Each session will be of one hour duration, usually weekly. However, the frequency can be shorter or longer depending on your needs at the time.
Where will the counselling sessions take place?
In my counselling room, which is purpose built, at the rear of my home, and affords a quiet, calm and confidential environment. It is light and airy, yet totally private. I have chosen calming colours of pale green and lilac as I believe calming colours are important for clients. My room is on the ground floor, and has easy access. If you have any mobility requirements, however, please let me know of these when you contact me. My room is furnished with two comfortable 'conservatory' style chairs and there is always filtered water available. Please take a look at my photographs.
There is off road parking available.
Tell me more about the counselling sessions?
Each session will be of one hour duration, usually weekly. But we can change this if you want a longer or shorter session.
Our first session together with be a 'getting to know you' exercise and this will, of course, be for both of us! If we feel that we may not feel happy to work with one another, then that is absolutely fine, although I do believe that a minimum of six sessions is needed, to enable us to see how we can work together.
Is there a written contract?
There will be a contract for us both to sign, which will basically cover the terms and conditions of our sessions together.
Our contract will give you the client, and me the counsellor, clarity and reassurance of our terms of working together and you will be given enough time to read through the terms, and an opportunity to ask any questions you may have.
What does a counselling session cost and how can I pay?
An hour’s counselling session costs £40. Payments can be made either by cash, online banking, cheque or debit/credit card. Payment will be required at each session.
Is what we talk about confidential?
Yes, all sessions are confidential between us. The only exception would be if you were thinking of harming yourself or others, or anything contravening The Children's Act. I also see a Supervisor once a month (which is a BACP requirement) and I may discuss some aspect of our work together, but this is to help me to help you and your personal details would remain anonymous.
What if I miss a session?
Please let me know as soon as you can if you are unable to attend your counselling session. Sessions that are cancelled with less than 24 hours notice are chargeable in full, unless there are extenuating circumstances.
What if I want to end the sessions?
At the outset, you may not know exactly how many sessions you feel you need until we begin to work together. A minimum of six sessions is advisable, in order to give us both the opportunity to build a therapeutic relationship. However, if you ever feel that you would prefer to end the sessions sooner, then please talk to me so we can build in an ending. I always review with my clients after 6 sessions. Some clients feel that they have gained benefit from this type of short term, solution focused therapy, whereas others may choose to remain in therapy for months or years. Counselling is as individual as you are!
Are you professionally qualified?
Yes, I am a Registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) which represents the largest professional body for counselling and psychotherapy in the UK. You can view my registered status here
